Charles Hamlin, M.D., president of the Colorado board of Compassion & Choices, is a retired hand surgeon in Denver and has been with the Compassion & Choices board for three years.

Helen Voorhis is the founder of the Colorado (Hemlock Society) chapter and was its first president. She served on the national Board, then was "drafted" to be the interim National Executive Director and oversaw the move of the national office to Denver from Eugene, Oregon. She remained on the national staff as Associate Director until 1998, and became the secretary of the Colorado chapter in 2001.

Marilyn Amer, a former adjunct professor of English at UCD, served as a Trustee on the DPL Board from 1979 to 1996 and as a Commissioner of the DPL from 1995 to 2005. She was the co-creator of the DPL's Rare and Not-So-Rare Book and Art Auction, now in its 25th year. She is currently the Vice President of Compassion & Choices, having served on the Board since 1997.

Peter Mayerson, M.D.,
is a partially retired psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He initially joined the Hemlock Society over 20 years ago and has been a member of the Colorado board for nine years.

Nancy Hemmenway Bale serves as secretary/treasurer. Born in Washington, D.C., she worked for the federal government and retired after 38 years of service mostly with the Department of Interior. After finishing her B.A. in communication from Regis University, she joined the staff of Compassion & Choices (Hemlock Society then), first as Faye Girsh’s executive assistant, and then moved to Chapter Relations Specialist. She is married to Roger Bale and has two grown step-daughters. Nancy and her husband share their home with an extraordinary cat, Fred, and a persnickety dog, Buster.

Ray Hockedy has been active in Compassion & Choices for the past 15 years and has served as the leader of the Boulder chapter and a member of the Colorado board for the past four years. He has both a BS and MS in electrical engineering and worked as an engineer and a technical manager until retiring in 2002. Ray enjoys volunteer activities and, for the past six years, has volunteered with Legal Services of Boulder County. In his spare time Ray likes reading, hiking, traveling and doting on his cat.

Joann Bush became involved with Compassion & Choices along with her late husband, Sandy, when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2005. Together they spoke to groups about being able to have choices and control at the end of life. Before his death in 2006 they made a video for future use of Compassion & Choices. She spends a great deal of time doing volunteer work. With her Registered Therapy Dog through the Delta Society and Denver Pet Partners, she visits many facilities bringing comfort to hospice patients through the human/animal bond. She also enjoys traveling in her motor home and continues to bring information about Compassion & Choices to her fellow travelers.

James Cowperthwaite James Cowperthwaite served as Associate Dean at Dartmouth College, Chair of the Board at Colorado Academy, Interim Head at Colorado Academy and the Logan School for Creative Learning, and as Trustee of the North Country School in Lake Placid, NY. He was Board Chair of the Colorado Wildlife Heritage Foundation and Commissioner of the Denver Urban Renewal Authority. He is President of Cowperthwaite & Co., a commercial real estate company, and has been on the Colorado Board of Compassion and Choices since 2006.

Roseann Murray is an associate attorney at the Kapsak Law Firm, LLC, practicing primarily in the areas of estate planning, elder law, and Social Security disability. She is a member of the Colorado and Broomfield bar associations and a previous board member of Table Mountain Animal Center and Women's Estate Planning Council. Ms. Murray earned a B.S. degree in criminal justice/criminology from Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado, her J.D. and LL.M. (in taxation) degrees from the University of Denver College of Law.

Mollie Saferstein Newman is an editor, writer, and professional proofreader who joined the Hemlock Society when it first began. Her interest in end-of-life care was sparked by family experiences. She donates her services in compiling the Newsletter and editing the chapter’s publications.
